Cups for a Feast

Fforest x The Ethicurean

This year I have been exploring how handmade vessels can enhance culinary experiences and create a sense of conviviality, whether its a quiet moment to relax, a gathering with friends or a grand feast.

The vessels we use daily are important in our lives, and if you are anything like me I am very specific about what vessel I use for my tea, coffee, or even water, very often the sink at the end of the day is peppered with lots of used mugs and cups.

When creating the cups for the Fforest x The Ethicurean Feast I knew they had to be some thing very special, they had to be simple and subtle to quietly elevate the food and fit well in the location, but not to overtake the the reason why we were all there… to FEAST.

Knowing they were all going to be pure white, with a hint of colour around the foot, I had room to be playful with their forms. Starting with the same weight of clay on the wheel, I threw a different shape for each of the one hundred vessels. Making each individual piece unique, creating special feel to the humble cup.

The Feast took place on Hallows Eve’s weekend at dusk, overlooking an amber meadow with glowing fires and the hustle and bustle of the guests arriving. A pot of miso broth was hung over a fire to keep warm and was poured, with care, into the cups and passed around.

For a moment all of the guests were clutching their cup around the fires, encountering their own unique experience but somehow collectively, through their gathering, experiencing exquisite food and stunning surroundings. This was a perfect start to the evening ahead.

The cups are staying at Fforest and will continue to be used at their events and future feasts.

If you would like to commission some cups or some unique ceramic pieces for your own dinner party or feasts I would love to talk and see what I can do.
